Paid advertising — when it starts to pay off

Paid advertising is the last step on this list, not the first — and that ordering is the entire advice. Ads amplify what already works. If nothing works yet, they amplify nothing at a cost per click.

Do not pay before this is true Your Google profile is complete, you have genuine recent reviews, and it is obvious within five seconds what you do and how to book. Advertising before that means paying to send people to something that does not convince them — you get the bill either way.

When it makes sense

Google or Meta

The distinction that matters: is the customer searching, or are you interrupting them? Google reaches someone who already has the problem — the right fit for trades, repairs, and anything urgent. Meta reaches people who were not looking, which suits visual and discretionary services: beauty, food, retail. Trades whose customers arrive in a hurry should start with Google and may never need the other.

Language targeting — a small budget’s best friend Both platforms let you target by the language someone uses. For an English-speaking business in Austria that is unusually valuable: instead of bidding against every established competitor for the general local search, you can reach the English-speaking residents of your district specifically — a narrower group, much less contested, and one that finds it genuinely hard to get served. Run this alongside a German-language Google profile, never instead of one.

The offline classics still work

For a strictly local business, none of this beats the basics on a modest budget: a sign people can read from across the street, a well-placed leaflet in the immediate neighbourhood, a listing in the local district paper, and a visible presence at whatever the neighbourhood does on weekends. They are cheap, they are unfashionable, and for a trade that lives on walking distance they frequently outperform the digital alternatives.

Common questions

Can I target ads at English speakers in Austria?

Yes, and it is one of the few genuinely useful targeting options for a small budget. Both Google and Meta let you target by the language a person uses, so you can reach English-speaking residents of your district specifically. That turns a small budget into a real advantage: instead of competing for every local search, you compete for a narrower group that is actively harder to serve and much less contested. Run it alongside a German profile rather than instead of one.

What is a realistic monthly budget?

Small enough that a bad month does not hurt, and steady enough to learn something — for most small local businesses that means a modest fixed monthly amount held for at least two or three months. A single large burst teaches you nothing, because you cannot tell noise from signal in two weeks. If you cannot yet name what a new customer is worth to you, that is the number to work out before you spend anything.

Google Ads or Meta?

It depends on whether people are searching for you or you are interrupting them. Google reaches someone who already has the problem and is looking for a solution — the better fit for trades, repairs and anything urgent. Meta reaches people who were not looking, which suits visual and discretionary services: beauty, food, retail. If your customers arrive with a problem, start with Google.
