Manufacturing vs. Trading
Only the handmade creation of jewelry requires the goldsmith license.
Simply buying and reselling finished jewelry (e.g., online shop)
can be done as a free trade without qualification.
Austrian Hallmarking
Precious metal items above certain fineness thresholds must be officially hallmarked at the Austrian Assay Office (Hauptpunzierungsamt Wien or branch office Innsbruck). This is a legal requirement under the Punzierungsgesetz.

Goldschmied is a regulated trade under §94 Z.25 of the Austrian Trade Act (GewO 1994). The standard route is the qualification exam (befähigungsprüfung).

Registering the trade

- Typically takes: 1-5 Werktage (bei vollstaendigen Unterlagen)
- Start trading: immediately on registration — you do not have to wait for the decision
