Why is Baumeister a reliability trade (Zuverlaessigkeitsgewerbe)?

Due to the high responsibility for building safety, the authority must verify your personal reliability before you can start. You cannot begin immediately.

Can a Baumeister do architectural planning?

Yes, Baumeister have limited planning rights (§99 GewO) for buildings up to a certain size. For complex projects, a Ziviltechniker is required.

Qualification: how to prove it

Baumeister is a regulated trade under §94 Z.4 of the Austrian Trade Act (GewO 1994). The standard route is the qualification exam (befähigungsprüfung).

  • Examined by: Meisterprüfungsstelle der Wirtschaftskammer
  • Exam fee: €0 — exam fees are covered by the federal government

If you cannot sit the exam, these routes are open to you:

  • Einschlägiges Studium (Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur) + Berufspraxis
  • Individuelle Befähigung bei nachgewiesener umfassender Erfahrung

Registering the trade

  • Cost: Free — registration itself carries no fee
  • Where: District administrative authority — Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat
  • Decision within: max. 3 months (includes a reliability check)
  • Typically takes: 2-6 Wochen (Zuverlaessigkeitspruefung)
